Welcoming a new child is considered a qualifying life event — which means you have 30 days to enroll in or update your benefits to cover your child or make other changes. They aren’t automatically added to your coverage.
You’ll need documentation to enroll your new child, like a birth certificate, adoption documents or foster care paperwork. Documentation must be submitted within the allotted time, or your dependent will lose benefits.

If you welcome a new child through birth, guardianship or placement for foster care/adoption:
Your medical plan covers your child from the date of birth or placement date.
While you're updating your benefits, you may want to consider increasing your life insurance coverage. You can also purchase supplemental coverage for your child(ren).
You’ll have 30 days from the date of birth, adoption or placement to make changes. You will need to supply proof of birth, adoption/foster care or guardianship to verify the addition of your new dependent. If you do not supply the information within the time allotted, coverage for your new dependent will be removed.
